Circles

Iona Salter Circle
Our women’s circle was named in honor of Iona Salter, one of the charter members of Shalimar United Methodist Church. Some of the current members joined the group back in the 1960’s! We started as the only evening circle because so many of the ladies worked during the day (predominantly at the Shalimar Post Office, for Eglin or for the Okaloosa District School System).

Now since many of us are retired (and choose not to drive at night), we vary our meeting times to include many lunchtimes. In the summer and at Christmas we meet for lunch at a restaurant. During the other months we often have lunch at a member’s house or we bring a covered dish for supper at the church. Our August Luau is a special event, usually held at the church.  (We’re good cooks!)

Our members have helped at many church events such as the Maundy Thursday breakfasts and the Holly Fair. At our evening meetings we often have a program presented by a member or a guest. We enjoy inviting our church pastoral staff and spouses to some of our get-togethers.

Each year in November our members make a pledge to the Iona Salter Circle. Most recently we have used that money to donate to causes such as the SUMC mission trips, Children in Crisis, and the United Methodist Children’s Home. In addition, we sponsor a scholarship for a child to attend Blue Lake camp in memory of Iona Salter, and for years we have paid for a daily newspaper to be delivered to the Coalition on the Homeless.

Our meeting date each month is the fourth Tuesday.  For more information, please contact Hilma Jenus, Henrietta Wilkerson, or Sherry Hartman.

Emily Roberts Circle,
continues to meet 9 months every year so that we may keep up with one another; truly old friends!  We love getting together and laughing at old age problems!!!  We donate monthly to Sharing & Caring's medicine fund.

Bible Studies

Splash of Joy I – Women’s Study “He Speaks to Me” by Priscilla Shirer Wednesday 9:30 am starting 1/3/07 This 6-week study addresses the question “How can I know when God is speaking to me?”  The author uses the account of God speaking to Samuel to show God does speak to Christians and how we can respond.  Participants will be encouraged to listen and respond to God’s voice and by doing so experience spiritual growth, Christian discipline and the desire to serve.

Splash of Joy II – Women’s Study “Daniel” by Beth Moore Wednesday 9:30 am starting 1/10/07 This more recent 13-week study focuses on the life of the prophet and explores the prophecies of Daniel utilizing video presentations and a study guide.
